What is a functional digestive disorder?
Functional digestive disorders encompass all digestive symptoms for which no organic cause adequately explains the discomfort felt: bloating, gastro-oesophageal reflux, bowel irregularities, a feeling of heaviness or abdominal cramps.
Their origins are multifactorial: stress, diet, imbalances in the autonomic nervous system, or mechanical tensions distant from the digestive sphere can all disrupt the proper functioning of the organs.
Osteopathy and digestive disorders
The digestive system is closely linked to the nervous, vascular and mechanical systems of the body. Tension at the level of the diaphragm, the spine or surrounding structures can disturb the mobility, innervation and vascularisation of the digestive organs, thereby impairing their function.
The osteopath assesses all these structures to identify mobility restrictions likely to perpetuate symptoms. Treatment is tailored to each patient and aims to restore optimal mobility in the various structures involved and to promote the conditions for healthy digestive function.
The consultation is also an opportunity to discuss lifestyle habits. Diet and stress factors are all elements that can play a role in the onset and persistence of digestive disorders.
